Concrete Storage Tanks
Concrete Storage Tanks are synonymous with Shay Murtagh Ltd. We design, manufacture and construct Concrete Storage Tanks for multiple applications capacities range from 900 gallons to 3 million gallons.
The tanks are constructed using Precast and pre - stressed wall panels on a reinforced in – situ Concrete foundation base. The tank is positioned on site after which a ring beam is cast on both sides of the wall panel. Depending on the application a roof may be required at which point, columns, spine beams and roof panels are erected and covered with an in – situ Concrete. Applications for tanks include – water storage reservoirs, balancing tanks, aeration tanks etc. Client base includes – Department of the Environment ( Group Water Schemes), Local Authorities, Agricultural Industry and Pharmaceutical Industry.
Smaller Precast tanks such as 4m³, 6m³, 9m³ and 16m³ are generally available ex – stock and come complete with lid.
Prestressed Concrete Storage Tanks
Shay Murtagh Ltd is the market leader in the manufacture and installation of Prestressed & Postensioned Concrete Storage Tanks in Ireland. This tank system is extensively used in the Water and Waste Water Industry and the company has undertaken thousand’s of Municipal and Industrial projects throughout Ireland with Local Authorities, Large Industry and Civil/Building Contractors.
The Storage Tank system can be used for a wide range of applications including, Water Storage Reservoirs, Aeration Tanks, Clarifier/Settlement tanks, SBR Tanks, Anoxic Tanks, Picket Fence Thickener Tanks, Slurry Storage Tanks and can be obtained in capacities ranging from 35 cubic metres (7,700 gallons) to 15,000 cubic metres (3.30 million gallons).
Tank Construction
Tanks are constructed by erecting precast and prestressed concrete wall panels on a circular reinforced concrete foundation base. The cylindrical tank walls are then postensioned circumferentially with greased and PVC coated super strand’s housed within a PVC duct’s. When postensioning is complete a reinforced concrete upstand ring beam is cast on both sides of wall panel at intersection of wall panel and foundation base.
A concrete roof can be provided using a grid system of precast concrete columns and spine beams which are then spanned with flat precast and prestressed concrete roof panels to cover entire roof area.
Rainman Rain Water Harvester
In 2004 Shay Murtagh introduced the Rainman Rainwater Harvesting System to the Irish market. It was the first of its kind and is still a highly innovative product. This system filters, stores and recycles rainwater for use in domestic, commercial and agricultural environments. Domestically this water can be used for washing machines, flushing toilets and outside taps. Secondary treatment can be provided on request.
Some advantages of the Rainman Rainwater Harvester:
» Reduces the consumption of mains water by 50%, therefore incurring less charges.
» It provides softer water for washing and laundry meaning less detergent’s need to be used
and it also prolongs the life span of household appliances including dishwashers and washing machines.
» As the water is soft and contains no chlorine it is ideal for watering plants and the garden.
» The Rainman also reduces the burden on older or overloaded sewerage systems in towns.
» The system is also ideal in industry, especially for low - grade process water.
» Installing the Rainman Rainwater Harvester can aid in the reduction of future investment in increasingly expensive and lengthy projects for new water developments.
» The water from the system is suitable for washing vehicles, reducing pressure on water
resources.
» Using the Rainman reduces expensive treatment of mains water, which uses large amounts of
power and chemicals.
» A major advantage of the Rain water system is that it can help to alleviate flooding in
problem areas.
*Although our water is filtered to a very high standard, it is not treated in any other way and we recommend that it is not consumed and as a result EU regulations stipulate that it should not be used for bathing/showering.
Septec – Domestic Sewage Treatment System
Treating effluent leaving your dwelling/business has in previous times been dealt with either by Main Drainage or Septic Tanks. With new sites now carrying out rigourous percolation reports, most projects need further treatment carried out before entering percolation areas or filter beds.
Septec is a domestic sewage treatment system that caters for up to 10 people. The system has a capacity of 8200 litres over three tanks. Each tank is manufactured in concrete which allows the system to be placed directly into an excavated area without concrete base or surround. Our experienced technicians deliver, install, commission and maintain these systems nationwide. With only two moving parts in the system, there is little maintenance required and with a final pumped effluent there is an even distribution of treated water to percolation area/filter bed. The Septec System is certified by the Irish Agrement Board.

Bridge Beams
Concrete is well known for its strength, durability and versatility. Through the use of pre -stressing strands, long, concrete beams can be used for supporting roads, car parks and many other applications. Shay Murtagh pre - stressed concrete bridge beams are suitable for solid slab, beam and slab or voided decks. These beams can be used where they are simply supported, continuous or in integral construction situations.
These pre - stressed beams are manufactured in a dedicated facility ensuring factory quality with engineered tolerances by personnel which have up to 40 years experience in pre - stressing. Our comprehensive testing procedures ensure that each project is manufactured to the requested specification.
We will also evaluate the transport requirements and recommend the best solution that matches the access requirements. Shay Murtagh sales and technical personnel will provide assistance at every stage of the project to ensure a fast and efficient build. Pre - stressed beams are an environmentally friendly solution ensuring low maintenance and a low whole-life cost.
Aggregate
In 1996, Shay Murtagh Limited purchased our own sand and aggregate deposit. All aggregates used in the production of concrete in Shay Murtagh’s come from this deposit. This aggregate is brought up form the lakebed using a dredger. Where it is pumped to a bunded area. At this point water subsides and the small aggregate is then screened and washed, crushed or stockpiled. All of our aggregate produced are compliant with I.S. EN 12620: 2002 – Aggregates for concrete. We also have in place management plans to re – instate used parts of the quarry and sandpit. This has already started with a nine - hole golf course. Also we have stocked the lake popular breeds of fish such as rainbow trout and carp and have in place a catch and release policy.
Overview
Shay Murtagh Limited manufactures, supplies and supervises the installation of precast concrete lift shafts. The product and the process of manufacture are patented. The demand for lifts is increasing due to both the pressure for higher density development and legislation. Lifts and the shafts that house them are expensive and can be problematic if the shaft is out of alignment. The higher the building the greater the potential for a problem at the interface between the block work and mechanical components.

GRC permanent soffit framework, produced at Shay Murtagh Ltd., specifically to suit all forms of structures, provides both a practical and economical way of supporting freshly poured in—situ concrete in composite bridge decks. Dependant upon the depth of the concrete deck, formwork spans of up to 1200 mm do not require temporary support.
GRC framework is capable of supporting various slab thicknesses over a variety of spans between main bridge beams. In addition, its characteristics allow it to behave as a composite part of the in-situ concrete under normal in service dynamic loading.
Available in thin panels, in either flat sheet or corrugated form, GRC form works delivered to site ready to use.
GRC single skin bridge deck formwork is recommended by the UK Department of Transports Highways and Transport Advice Note; BA36/90.
Tensile tests carried out on samples taken from actual contracts show that the bond between GRC permanent formwork and the concrete it supports is generally stronger than either parent material.
