The Reading Viaduct Development superstructure is massive and it has taken 30 weeks to build as pointed out by Project Director for Balfour Beatty Billy Smith in a recent interview with The Rail Engineer.
This 2km structure built in such a timeline is a tremendous success and Shay Murtagh Precast are delighted to have been part of this project.
In Summer we completed our contract with Balfour Beatty.
The contract required us to manufacture and deliver a range of precast products with large quantities to the Reading Station redevelopment. This is one of Network Rails key infrastructure projects and is part of their £850m programme of improvement works in the Reading area.
The viaduct will cut delays caused by congestion on the tracks to the west of the station when it opens in 2015, creating more capacity for an additional four passenger trains per hour as well as more freight trains.
Precast Product Specifications
320 no. bridge beams each 23.5m long and 170 large box culverts with internal dimensions of 4.9m x 2.5m were manufactured in Raharney and then transported to site. This project is a testament to the collaborative approach the Balfour Beatty commercial, design and on site teams engaged with Shay Murtagh Precast.
Timelines were crucial and with specialist logistics and transport required for each beam, communication and planning were fundamental to the success of the project.
