About GOAL

GOAL, an organisation founded by former Irish Press journalist, John O’Shea in 1977 when he saw the plight of street children in Kolkata (Calcutta) first-hand. Over the last 43 years GOAL has responded to many of the world’s major humanitarian crises, working with vulnerable communities in more than 60 countries.

Every day, more than 3,000 GOAL staff work to improve the lives of those affected by conflict and natural disaster. Last year they reached more than five million people in 14 countries across Africa, the Middle East and Latin America.

John O’Shea, a former journalist for the Irish Press, created GOAL in 1977 after first witnessing the misery of street kids in Kolkata (Calcutta). Working with vulnerable populations in more than 60 countries, GOAL has responded to many of the major humanitarian disasters that have occurred during the past 43 years.

More than 3,000 GOAL employees work daily to make life better for individuals impacted by armed conflict and natural disasters. Over five million people were reached in 14 nations last year, spread across Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America.
