Precast Concrete Units for Carter’s Bridge Replacement in St. Helens

Shay Murtagh Precast were recently contracted by J Murphy & Sons to design and manufacture a number of precast concrete units for Carter’s Bridge Replacement in Garswood, St. Helens. The original bridge had fallen into disrepair and needed to be replaced to comply with current safety standards.

The new design consisted of a steel composite bridge structure in which beams were spliced and joined together on-site with the final section of parapet being cast in situ. This was the first time a project of this scale, in terms of size and complexity, was undertaken by Shay Murtagh. Solving the logistical and technical problems posed by such a design was challenging, however, given the knowledge and experience of our team a successful outcome was inevitable. Shay Murtagh Precast also manufactured the Cill Beams and approach units to the structure.

Trial assembly took place in the factory on 9th May by our highly skilled assembly team. Highly accurate setting out was required given the tight on site constraints. The units were then disassembled and delivered on schedule to site where installation took place on 29th of May. We would like thank J Murphy & Sons on another successful project completion and look forward to our next collaboration.
