At Shay Murtagh, we take pride in piecing together some of the most intricate infrastructure projects across the UK and Ireland. Recently, we partnered with J Murphy & Sons to support Network Rail in the completion of a challenging project at Downs Park Road, Hackney, London.
The project required manufacturing six cill beams, each weighing up to 21 tonnes, alongside a bespoke 25-tonne precast concrete beam. These structural components played a key role in the 35-metre long and 10-metre wide rail structure, covering a surface area of approximately 350m². Our team expertly navigated the complexities involved in delivering these critical elements.
To ensure precise installation, we replicated the site conditions and abutments at our facilities, allowing us to position the cill and precast concrete beam accurately. Once delivered to the site, the real challenge began—working alongside the team from J Murphy & Sons to install 30 steel I-beams and approximately 400 pieces of permanent formwork. This phase of the project called for careful coordination, teamwork, and technical precision to bring this 350m² structure together flawlessly.

This project is a testament to the strength of collaboration between Murphy and Shay Murtagh. Through strategic planning and attention to detail, we ensured that each piece of this complex “jigsaw puzzle” fit perfectly, resulting in a robust and reliable structure. It is a proud moment for the entire team involved, demonstrating our commitment to delivering engineering excellence.
