Shay Murtagh Group were contracted to provide the all the main precast concrete structure (beams, columns, slabs, structural walls and lift cores), the precast external cladding (eave beams and cladding concrete panels) and the landscaping (precast benches). The overall success of the project came from of a full 3D coordination with main specialists, mainly structural architectural and others.
The structural connections were a challenge that present itself because of the blast requirements. Due to the tight requirements in some units such as: column/foundation and beam/column the method used was the PEIKKO connections. These types of connections demanded a very precise procedure for production and installation.
The installation of project – structure and cladding - presented itself as a defiant timeline to meet. Since the project was improvement of an open Rail Station, it was necessary to have programmed stops in the rail line to allow the installation works proceed. Because of this, most of the structural units were installed during the night period which demanded a close coordination between SM team and the site team.
The cladding units came with their own challenges also due to the crane restriction on site. One of station pavilion is located close to a river which conditioned the precast external cladding solution and its installation.
The precast concrete structure includes Columns, Beams, Slabs, Lift shaft units, Stairs, loadbearing Walls, Cladding bespoke Eave beams, performing at around 1400m3 of concrete and 205tonnes of reinforcement precast in both of our factories Raharney and Somercotes. This highlights the project's structural scale.
