Lambeth College Nine Elms

Lambeth College and Shay Murtagh joined forces in the summer of 2017 to develop a state-of-the-art education facility at Nine Elms, London.

Evans Concrete by Shay Murtagh, a subsidiary of Shay Murtagh, designed and manufactured the architectural precast external hard landscaping units for the new London South Bank Technical College at Nine Elms in Vauxhall, London.

The London South Bank Technical College is a 10,000 square metre Further Education centre specialising in construction, science, dentistry, engineering, digital and creative arts, IT, English, and math.

The redevelopment of the Nine Elms campus is an education-led scheme that provides increased educational floor space, student housing, and a shared workspace. The building has been designed with flexibility and sustainability in mind and works began on the site in February 2021 and completed in December 2022.

We manufactured and delivered 90 precast concrete units, including concrete bench seating, and retaining walls, in a limestone architectural mix with an acid-etched finish. The hard landscaping is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also functional and enjoyed by the students and local communities.

The 10-storey STEAM centre provides a range of teaching and support spaces, including a 2-storey main entrance, a cafe/social learning space, and large workshops for construction skills training.

The building features double height spaces and a central corridor for easy navigation. A series of larger double-height 'Digital Spine' spaces at the prominent South-East corner of the building provide cross-college facilities and create a series of shopwindows to the busy Wandsworth Road.

Evans Concrete by Shay Murtagh is proud of its collaboration with the main contractor, Graham Construction Limited, and all stakeholders are enthusiastic about the outcome of the concrete bench seating units. The London South Bank Technical College at Nine Elms in Vauxhall, London, perfectly blends in with the stunning architecture of the neighbourhood and provides a unique character to the educational area.
