Portal frame units, cill beams and base units for the Cambridge Depot of the Thameslink Portal

One of the biggest transport infrastructure projects of the century, Thameslink. When completed comprise a 115 station main-line system in South East England. It has drawn together some of the finest architects, engineers, designers and construction companies in the field of civil engineering.

The Cambridge depot forms a major part of the development. It will provide stabling and servicing facilities for the new Class 700 trains.

Spencer Construction, the main contractor for the Thameslink Portal in Cambridge, is working alongside Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR), the UK’s largest train operating company, and Network Rail, on the multi-million pound package.

The project designers had to take account of the existing transport infrastructure, and this included a road bridge.  The choice of material for the bridge was precast concrete, and Spencer Construction commissioned Shay Murtagh to manufacture and deliver the components.

It was a good, but not surprising, choice.  Shay Murtagh has worked on rail infrastructure projects before.  With over forty years’ experience in manufacturing, delivering and installing precast concrete portal frame units. Shay Murtagh has an enviable reputation for reliability and efficiency. They are often the first choice of major construction contractors.

Shay Murtagh has delivered the portal frame units for the Cambridge depot, as well as the cill beams and the base units.

Richard Watson, Spencer Group Project Director, said:

“This has been a very challenging project but, through close collaboration with our client and the designers. We have overcome many obstacles and delivered the first phase of this scheme in line with our programme and, significantly, on schedule for the railway timetable change in May."

“This success delighted everyone involved. We’re now looking forward to the second phase of the project.”

Shay Murtagh is pleased to have played a part in the construction of this important stage of the development, and looks forward to working with The Spencer Group in the future.
